Calvary Cemetery, Sunnyside, Queens, New York, New York

Covering 365 acres, this is the largest cemetery in the U.S. based on graves.  It was founded by St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1846 when NYC declared restrictions on burials.  It was initially used for poor Roman Catholics, it is now full.  Burials are now on Staten Island.  The 1892 Gatehouse on Greenwood Ave. is Queen Anne style.  Notable "residents" include Lorenzo de Ponte (1749-1838) who wrote librettos for Mozart.  While Woodlawn has the spectacular robber baron mausoleums, Brightwood has the Olmsted landscaping, Calvary has views of Manhattan skyline that are breathtaking.
