Thomas Garden Apts., 840 Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York, New York

Andrew J. Thomas was a child of NYC slums.  He was orphaned at age 13.  He became master of the landscaped courtyard.  840 is considered his masterpiece (1927).  The Japanese gardens offered a measure of Zen tranquility.  Thomas is best known for his garden-apartment complexes in Jackson Heights (see my earlier blogs).
