Bushwick, Brooklyn

There are some interesting structures on Bushwick Ave. unrelated to the Beer Barons. Two blocks north on Central Ave. is one of the largest churches in Brooklyn, the St. Barbara Roman Catholic Church. This Spanish Baroque edifice (1910) was built on the largess of local brewer Leonard Eppig, who had a daughter named Barbara. Next door is El Puente, a youth organization promoting human rights and environmentalism, with murals covering the entire facade.
The Greek Revival (Ionic columns) South Bushwick Reformed Church (1853) has seen better days. The steeple is tilting and ready to fall !

Also noteworthy is the Brooklyn Public Library, originally an Andrew Carnegie library. Finally at Arion Pl. is a red brick palace (1887) conceived by Arion Männerchor (a German glee club, "männerchor" means men's chorus), complete with lyre designs in the balcony railings and corners of the roof (Arion is a lyre player in Greek mythology).

Across the street from the Ulmer mansion is a cute little house with pyramidal roof.
