Thomson Ave., Long Island City, Queens, New York, New York

The International Design Center of New York ("IDCNY") was one of the biggest failures for NYC’s interior design & wholesale furnishings industries.  The renovation of the space was designed in 1985 by world-renowned architects I.M. Pei and Gwathmey Siegal & Assocs. with a wayfinding system designed by Vignelli Assocs. (designed the iconic 1972 subway map). The market crashed in 1987, and it was a struggle to get tenants to sign on when there were already established design centers existing in Manhattan, close to the buyers. The buildings became occupied by new tenants, including the NY Dept of Design & Construction and DoT, DeVry Inst., and LaGuardia Comm. College. All that remains is the large IDCNY sign.
